Periodontitis – How Do I Save My Teeth?

Ornella | Dental | Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Periodontitis is a bad disease.  At least once a year or more likely twice you visit the dentist to see how your teeth are faring.  You think back on the brushing and more you have done, but also remember the times you missed.  Normally all is well and you get a scolding from the hygienist about flossing more or brushing.

However this time you hear a new word from your dentist that is periodontitis.  What was that again?  You know cavity and gingivitis as familiar words and problems but this is new.  Hopefully it is not really bad, right doc?

Your concern grows as you hear the word periodontitis again and associated with the word disease and bad.  You feel compelled to ask a question and worst luck the dentist answers.  He explains that the disease can ultimately cause major damage to your gums and loss of your teeth.  Yikes!  Now he has your complete attention and panic starts to set up in your body.

Another question about periodontitis comes out of your mouth and this time it wonders about miracle cures from modern dentistry.  The dentist frowns a little and says there is not a magic pill to cure this disease, but several treatments can be effective most of the time.  Not the perfect answer for your addled brain, but it does calm you somewhat and give you some hope.

Periodontitis is basically bacteria based disease you discover and can be treated by killing the bacteria and helping the tissues to heal.  How do you kill bacteria that have formed a pocket home between your tooth and gum?  There are several theories on that you note from basic antiseptics to advanced bacteria fighting tools.

The first tool you try is the natural way to fight periodontitis and the infection.  Natural herbal solutions are pasted around your gum line and especially near or in the pockets of disease.  The herbal paste has noted bacteria fighting properties and after a week or so, there is some improvement.  But it is going slow, so you try the next idea.

You notice an advertisement for a super mouthwash specifically designed to fight the disease periodontitis.  Now you are a near expert on that name and quickly decide to try this product out.  It arrives and you start washing and rinsing as directed to again kill those nasty bacteria that like your mouth as a home.  The results are again not great but there does seem to be a reduction in the areas.

You really think you have it with this last supposed cure for periodontitis.  The main difficulty is getting the bacteria fighting solutions into the pocket homes of the disease.  This is the same difficulty you faced in brushing and flossing to begin with.  Next you try a relatively new device that places a mouthpiece over your teeth and the inside is covered with bacteria fighting goo.  As you wear the device, the goo seeps quietly into the pockets and kills the bacteria.  This final tool really works well so your teeth are safe for now.  But you vow to brush and floss all the time now.
